"Weird News" stories trivialize violence against women

I'm often annoyed by the choice of what is selected for the  "weird news" category in websites.  The venerable AP even sends many of these stories out in a weird news feed.

For example:

Man allegedly drenches wife with hose for smoking
If you read the story, he didn't just spray her with the hose.  They were arguing about her smoking, she picked up the phone, he thought she was calling the police so he elbowed her in the mouth while trying to get the phone away from her.  So there's more direct physical violence, but it's buried beneath the lede.  So the takeaway isn't that men hit their wives, it's that  you can get arrested for squirting your wife with a hose even though you're trying to save her life, the ungrateful bitch.

'You Light Up My Life' writer accused of NY rape

"Several women accused Joseph Brooks of luring them to his home andsexually assaulting them while they auditioned for movie roles."  I understand the irony, but it's not really weird that men who write sappy love poetry can also be rapists.  It goes against the stereotype of the rapist as stupid and uncultured gorilla, but that stereotype is wrong.  Man bites dog?  No, this dog bites women just as often as any other kind.

Rape Used to "Cure" South African Lesbians
Yeah, this is just on someone's twitter feed.  That they think this is weird?  Is weird.  In fact, it's another stereotype, that lesbians just don't know what's good for them, so it shouldn't really be surprising that anyone believes this would work.

Iowa man grabs wheel, crashes car during quarrel
"Officers said the couple apparently got into a verbal quarrel, whichescalated when the man began kicking the windshield and snapped therearview mirror off. Officials said the man then grabbed the wheel, which caused the car to veer off the road and hit a cement wall. Thevehicle then struck a small tree."  So it's not just the grabbing the wheel, he was already getting violent with the car.  Then he tries to injure or kill his wife and himself.  Whatta joker!
