Feminist youth disporting playfully on Something Awful.
I was poking around on Something Awful and came upon this steaming turd of ignorance, in which the author explains about "The Patriarchy is Not Keeping You Down," "Wage Disparity Exists, and Women Are Responsible For It" (because they don't work as hard as men), "Preventing Violence Against Women is a Sexist Movement" (because that would be special treatment), "Your Period is a Disgusting but Natural Bodily Function," "PUA is Retarded, But It's Not Mind Control," "When Cancer Funding Competes" (because men apparently need help starting up charities), and "Poor Self-Image, It's a Problem We All Deal With."
I expected the discussion to be stupid as well. It got off to a bad start with stuff like Ema Nymton's, "Screeching like a harpy won't make guys want to listen," but I was pleasantly surprised to find many of the later responses thoughtful. Some were obviously feminist-informed. Some gems:
Fortune Favors Diebold: "Fighting for the rights of women alone or the betterment of women alone is something that very very few feminists buy into, yet people want to take them as the norm rather than question thier own beliefs/priviledge. "
The Newman: "This is a banner day: the forum of young white male nerds has finally absolved themselves of sexism. "
Hysterical Woman: "My god! I've never heard such original ideas! Time to stop the feminist movement, girls!"
the GZA strip: "on the other side of that extremely distasteful coin, a discussion about feminism will often get bogged down with people eager to establish that they're not ANYTHING like other guys, they have somehow opted out of male privilege, and YOU FEMINISTS would get a lot more accomplished if you weren't so combative all the time, so please soothe my ego for a while before I will allow the discussion to get back around to, you know, women's issues."
One thing I didn't expect I would like about this forum is that some posters deliberately don't use "curse" words. They replace them with "poo poo" and "gently caress" and "loving" and so on. Gives it a surreal feel. On the negative side, the use of "retarded" as a deprecatory term was jarring and annoying.
